Chinese Internet 26th Report stats:

#Flash Player investing in a 3D future, plans coming in October #away3d #adobe

I'm not sure about the headline- "investing in a 3D future"- but having an official framework might not be bad thing for Flash developers to have in their arsenal. And yes, we are talking about 3D models, triangles, tessellation, etc- not slapping on a pair of overpriced glasses to play a 'true 3D game' (or at least I really hope not). As far as I know the MPAA has not squatted and tried to mark it's territory on browsers and web plug-ins... yet.

I certainly don't believe 'all websites need to use 3D' or anything crazy like that, but the ability to have a common, reliable (Hardware-accelerated? Possibly with physics?) 3D framework running in the Flash Player could be a plus. The several third party engines that currently exist are all impressive in their own way, but there are so many of them- and most are private projects kept alive by dedicated developers on their own time- maybe Adobe has (or will) hire some of those folks!

Video Standard: Testing H.264 Videos Versus Google's VP8

In one corner, we have H.264: the tried-and-true industry codec for high-quality multimedia compression that has found itself caught up in a larger battle of open versus proprietary versus licensed standards for Web multimedia distribution. It's the preferred codec for displaying non-Flash-based multimedia content within all browsers save Firefox, which prefers the open-source codec Ogg Theora for a multitude of philosophical and financial reasons.

According to Encoding.com, 66 percent of all the videos the service deliversof more than 5 million videos in 2009, reports TechCrunchare encoded in H.264. Ogg Theora makes up a whopping 4 percent of videos encoded, and VP6, the chief codec driving the video playback in Adobe's Flash Player 8, takes up 23 percent.

H.264 encoding is the clear winner in this battle but with the recent entrance of Google's open-sourced VP8 codec into the squared circle, does H.264 have a chance to win the war?

It's far too early to run the same kind of comparison of scale for H.264 versus VP8. However, Streamingmedia.com has run a series of quality tests between the two codecs to get a sense of just how well they stack up against one another.

The site used the help of Sorenson Media to encode a simple, standard definition movie into both VP8 and MainConcept H.264 formats, with each video running at nearly identical data rates, identical audio bit rates, identical frame sizes, and identical aspect ratios.

The site found that the two codecs stack up fairly closely when displaying relatively low-motion videos, like a typical, "talking head" YouTube-style shot. VP8 delivered a higher quality video when combining low motion with a complex background, though the H.264-encoded video showed off fewer "blocks" of discernable compression in higher-motion video. VP8 had a few too many artifacts compared to H.264 and, in general, H.264 delivered a sharper picture for fast motion.

However, the author of the comparison, Jan Ozer, concludes by noting that, "H.264 still offers better quality, but the difference wouldn't be noticeable in most applications."

That's an interesting note, especially when taken in the context of a recent analysis of the VP8 codec by x264 developer Jason Garrett-Glaser. In his summary, which has been touted by Apple CEO Steve Jobs himself, Garrett-Glaser writes, "VP8 is simply way too similar to H.264: a pithy, if slightly inaccurate, description of VP8 would be "H.264 Baseline Profile with a better entropy coder."

Or, to put it another way, Garrett-Glaser finds that VP8 is a better encoding format quality-wise than Ogg Theora, but is nevertheless the weaker sibling of H.264.

You can download Streamingmedia's test files and determine the quality winner for yourself. You'll want to first make sure that you're running a browser that supports WebM playback via HTML5you can find a list of applicable applications on the WebM site.
